Report

The second round of the 2016 Autotest championship took place on the 8th May with a total of fourteen entries turning up at Caldale to tackle the two courses. Varied conditions throughout the day allowed a few of the competitors stretch out a gap with others struggling to avoid course markers.

Once again, newcomer Ross Mackie rounded out the list competitors. With improved brakes and a new battery the MG ZT got off to a rapid start, reminiscent of a red arrow with a dubious trail of blue smoke. Ross improved throughout the day putting in faster times in tests two and four however, with a new list of issues, was unable to make an impact on the rest of the field. Car supplier, Ian Spence, managed to do a little better two places up the road in 12th. Both drivers struck just one course marker despite the car's size and were again able to work quick to overcome the car's issues.

Separating the two MG drivers on the timesheet was Corey Eddington. Another convincing drive earned Corey her first Best Performance by a Lady Driver trophy of the campaign however the increase in pace was accompanied by an increase in penalties, with her striking two course markers.

In 11th place was last year's young driver of the year, Jordan Brown, returning with his shared VW Polo. He showed a substantial increase in pace, undoubtedly making his mandatory co-driver a little nervous at times but with four clean runs was awarded this week's Young Driver Award.

Taking the first positions in the top ten was Colin McAllister. As usual he doubled entered his MX5, collapsing his soft top for alternate runs. The 5% penalty with the roof down proved to be the deciding factor between his two entries as he put in three clean runs with each, however engine troubles halted progress and Colin was unable to put in a fourth time with either format, recording maximum time penalties.

The experienced side of the Brown duo took home their first bragging rights of the season with Roy also putting in a strong, penalty free performance. In the end he was able to finish in 8th position with the Polo. The same could not be said for Alan Tait however who was doubled entered in his shared Corsa and Polo. A penalty in each car for striking course markers meant he had to settle for 6th and 7th positions.

Johnny Mackay was another driver hindered by penalties. He showed early signs of pace in his MG ZR but collected course markers in tests two and three meaning he was unable to get any closer to the podium than 5th. Taking the last non podium spot was Steven Tait in his first entry of the day. Time keeping issues meant he had to re-run test four, however his Polo decided this was one run too many as it nosedived into the concrete half way round with a broken wishbone. A decision was taken to award Steven a less severe maximum penalty due to the confusion leaving him just one second of the top three.

The first two steps on the podium contained a surprisingly familiar situation with Andrew Moar, in his road legal Scimitar SS1, and Steven, in his Vauxhall Corsa, ending up on equal points. The last time this happened, a final showdown saw Andrew take a win for rear wheel drive however this time the decision was taken to consult the time sheets to find the driver who was faster on each test. Steven was elevated to second spot with two faster times to Andrew's one.

There was no confusion with this week's winner though with Adam Eddington taking a convincing first win of the championship. The relative newcomer showed excellent pace throughout the day, unbeaten on three of the four tests, and despite hitting a course marker in his Civic created an overall lead of fourteen seconds.

With the third round of the championship on the 5th June, the drivers have four weeks to make any necessary repairs or improvements to their cars so spectators will hopefully see another large entry list.
