Report
The last event in the Motor Club's Autotest Season was held on Sunday under blustery skies with ten competitors hoping to secure the best position in the annual championship. As usual the Autotest was run at the Caldale Camp site kindly loaned to the Club by Landowner Mr. Brian Laughton.
Jordan Brown was entered in the Young Driver category for competitors aged fifteen to seventeen year old. It is mandatory for such drivers to carry an experienced co-driver and to meet other safety requirements. Jordan was driving a VW Polo shared with his fellow driver and father Roy Brown. His progress continues to get quicker but alas had picked up penalties for going the wrong way on one route section and later striking a marker post, the result was a drop to tail end at the final count.
Usually amongst the lead group of drivers Aaron Moar, driving a Subaru Justy and a soft-top MG TF, failed to keep the cars under control or to avoid destroying several course markers. His best result being fifth in the Justy and ninth in the MG.
Aaron's brother Andrew seemed afflicted by the same absence of fine control and magnetic attraction to course markers. Even allowing for the distraction of having the Justy's exhaust system disassemble itself his less than lack lustre scores ended at eighth in the MG and Fifth in the Justy.
Ignition problems afflicted Iain Spence's Renault Clio once more but he persisted and managed a creditable seventh place with no penalties.
Just one point ahead in sixth place was Roy Brown in the spluttering VW Polo which he hustled round penalty free.
Jonny MacKay's MGZR, despite uprooting a marker post, was rapid as usual but on this occasion was sufficient for first step on the podium in third place.
Colin MacAllister fielded his Mazda MX5 in both hood up and hood down categories and knew he had the opportunity of maintaining his position in the Club Championship. The smart money says that driving with the hood down offers a visual advantage and so a time penalty is applied. As it turned out Colin's time for the hood down was not enough to overcome this penalty. With care not to overdrive the routes and yet put in consistently quick results Colin took second place with hood down and first spot with the hood up.
This last event enabled the presentation of the Club Championships to be awarded and they are:-
